On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
